Participatory Science ProjectBeetle Census

Data

In 2024, volunteers Charlie Staines, Sue Staines, and Erin Allen identified 133 species new to SERC's Edgewater campus, bringing the campus total to 1090! Inventory work will continue in 2025 and we hope to reach 1,200 species by the end of 2025.

A line graph showing the total number of beetle species identified goes from 113 in 2018 to 1090 in 2024.

In 2024, Charlie and Sue worked with the Spatial Ecology and Conservation Lab on a new ground beetle study at the BiodiversiTREE site on SERC’s campus, where a 100-year-long experiment is being done see if tree diversity (less or more) during restoration affects the ecosystem. The study aims to understand the effect of microclimate on ground beetle diversity and abundance. Stay tuned for results!
