Continuing Stories

The stories of the people explored in this exhibition don’t end with the arrival of SERC. They continue in the surrounding communities, where descendants celebrate their diverse heritage and their connections to this place.

Today, this land, which once belonged to wealthy plantation owners, belongs to all of us. Its continuing preservation helps historians and scientists investigate our past and study the future of our environment.

The Smithsonian Institution blends science with history, art, and culture to provide a better understanding of our interactions with the environment and each other.

Connect the past to the present.

The accompanying photos show visitors and volunteers exploring SERC’s campus, including young people engaging in hands-on activities and groups touring historic buildings and archaeological dig sites.
