My research expertise spans the fields of biogeochemistry, photobiology, soil microbial ecology, and environmental change with respect to a wide range of wetland ecosystems; this includes freshwater, saline, tidal, and non-tidal systems. Advancing our understanding of the ecological linkages, processes, and feedbacks regulating nutrient and carbon fluxes between the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and pedosphere is essential to improving their representation in models used to predict environmental change and inform environmental policy. Thus, the focus of my current work is on elucidating tidal-marsh/estuarine interactions by explicitly linking biotic and abiotic processes in tidal wetland soils and estuaries, and by assessing the relative significance of organic matter transformation pathways along wetland-estuary interfaces.
