As one of the world's leading ecological research centers, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center provides a wealth of resources to journalists covering the environment. Research at SERC focuses on the coastal zone, where close to 70 percent of the world's population lives. SERC scientists make discoveries in climate change, conservation, fisheries, mercury and nutrient pollution, invasive species, and other urgent issues. The center's researchers work around the world, and are able to comment on both global issues and local issues from SERC's headquarters in Chesapeake Bay.
