Methane is a gas that can be comical or deadly, but in the atmosphere it’s a powerhouse, because it traps heat up to 45 times more efficiently than carbon dioxide. Methane in the atmosphere has spiked in recent centuries, making it a significant contributor to global climate change. In this talk, SERC biogeochemist Pat Megonigal will describe where methane comes from, where it goes, and how human activities have changed the natural cycles of methane over thousands of years. He’ll also highlight ways to reduce methane emissions from activities such as agriculture, raising livestock, and energy distribution.
