Summary: The Clean Air Act has helped Americans breathe easier and live healthier, reducing illnesses and premature deaths and contributing to a stronger economy and better quality of life. At the same time, the Act has also helped protect our waters by reducing harmful emissions of oxidized nitrogen. Air pollution contributes about one-third of the total nitrogen loads delivered to the lands and tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. For the first time, the EPA has included air pollution in its plans for the Bay’s restoration. In this talk, EPA modeling expert Lewis Linker will outline some of the encouraging trends they’ve seen. One example: Loads of oxidized nitrogen deposited on the Chesapeake watershed are falling, and are estimated to continuing falling until 2025 and beyond.
