Chesapeake Bay Parasite Project

Saturday, June 9, 2018 - 9:00am - 4:30pm
Event Location
SERC Dock in Edgewater, MD

An introduced parasite is affecting native mud crabs in Chesapeake Bay. The parasite is now common in the Bay, but its abundance and spread vary greatly from year to year. Scientists need your help to track the parasite!

Event Details

We welcome volunteers age 12+, although all volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating parent/guardian.  We can accommodate a maximum of 6 volunteers under the age of 16 per sampling session, and volunteers under the age of 16 may only sign-up for one half day session per day unless prior permission has been received.  Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

We will be working at the SERC dock in Edgewater, MD on June 9, 10, 23, 24. On June 8, we will be working at Jefferson Patterson Park in St. Leonard, MD and on June 12 we will be working at the Cooperative Oxford Laboratory in Oxford, MD.  Please note that transportation to Oxford and St. Leonard will not be provided.

End times are approximate, and we may end earlier.  We will do our very best to finish by 4:30 each day.

We HAVE TO KNOW how many people we will have at a given sampling session so that we only bring in as many mud crab habitats as we have volunteers to sort through them (once they come in, they have to be sorted!), so please let me know ASAP if you need to cancel or change the times that you've signed up for.  We understand that emergencies do happen, but please give us as much notice as possible so that we can adjust accordingly.

Please contact Alison Cawood (cawooda@si.edu, 443-482-2271) if you would like to sign up. You MUST sign up to participate.

Archaeology Dig Day

Saturday, June 9, 2018 - 9:30am - 3:30pm

Pre-registration Required

Event Details

In general, we ask that participants at the Saturday Dig Days are at least 10 years old. If you have an interested child under the age of 10, please contact me as special permission for younger children may be granted on a case-by-case basis. All volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult. The general activities in archaeology are fairly straightforward (digging, sieving sediment, washing and sorting artifacts). We provide all training and materials. We work outside on uneven terrain, and ask that participants wear close toed, sturdy shoes.

The dig day will be happening even if it rains, or if it is hot. It if doesn't rain or if it is only drizzling, we will be working outside, so please dress to be comfortable and in clothing that can get dirty. If it does rain, there will be opportunities to work in the lab (close-toed shoes are required in the lab too).

Please contact Alison Cawood (443-482-2271, cawooda@si.edu) if you would like to sign up.
