| parameters | area, perimeter, landuse#, landuse-id, landuse, crops, livestock, qualifier. The landuse item contains land use codes. 20 land use codes are in the data set: 11, 12, 13, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 31, 32, 33, 34, 42, 45, 50, 62, 74, 75, 99. The corresponding land use categories are: 11 - developed (buildings/residential yards), 13 - commercial buildings and shopping malls, 15 - roads, 21 - row crop, 22 - contour/strip crop, 23 - orchard, 24 - feedlot/poultry house, 25 - farm yard, 31 - active pasture, 32 - hayfield, 33 - mowed grass (non-hayfield, park), 34 - fallow, 42 - forest and forested wetland, 44 - shrubs/brush (natural), 45 - old field, 50 - water, 62 - herbaceous wetland, 74 - bare rock, 75 - mine/quarry/etc., 99 - unknown. 5 crop codes are in the data set: 1 (corn), 3 (soy), 6 (wheat), 23 (orchard), 32 (hayfield). |

| abstract | Land use for NSF study watersheds sampled with automated stream samplers. Watersheds in Inner and Outer Piedmont clusters, and Upper, Middle, and Lower Coastal Plain clusters. Land use patches were traced from 1987 or 1998 1:9600 NAPP (National Aerial Photography Program) photos onto clear plastic overlays. Classifications were verified with ground observations in fall, 1991. Data were later digitized from overlays into ARC/INFO and geographically referenced to USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps. This land use data is part of a study to test the effects of agricultural land use on discharges of water, sediments and nutrients from Piedmont watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay. |
