Paddle along the shores of Muddy Creek and the Rhode River to learn about one of the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. We'll look for wildlife, birds, reptiles, and more. This trip is designed for beginning and intermediate paddlers. Basic instruction will be given at the start of the program. PUDDLE STOMPERS: I CAN HIKE TOO! (FULL)

Nature is more fun when you're outside, so children ages 3-5 yrs. of age and their parents and guardians are invited to join us monthly for a short hike or outdoor activity. We'll look under rocks and logs, stroll through marshes, and journey through forest paths. August 6th- I Can Hike Too! Participants will be introduced to feeling comfortable in nature including how to hike, look, listen, and feel along the trail. This includes the right clothes, shoes, and daypack. LOST TOWNS ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIG DAY

SERC is partnering with the Anne Arundel County Lost Towns Archeological team to help history come alive by learning about our colonial past and participating in a dig on the Contee Farm property. We'll start at SERC with a brief talk, then we'll journey to a dig site where you will be trained to help sift colonial artifacts with the dig team. For ages 12 and older. INTRODUCTION TO BLUE CRABS AND CRABBING

TRAIL TREKKERS: LEARNING PLANTS ON THE TRAIL

Join us for this fun outdoor series which will be an introduction to discovering life on forest trails. Suggested for ages 8 to adult. August 13th- Medicinal Plants on the Trail: In the final program of this series we'll learn to identify native plants and trees by their bark and leaves, how to use a dichotomous key, and the medicinal qualities of these plants. Cost is $20 per person or $30 per couple and includes three programs (in the 3 part series) and a magnifying glass for the trail. Pre-registration is required by calling (301) 238.2737. Drop-ins are accepted if there is space, $8 per person drop in fee.

SERC SCOUT DAY

Scouts are invited to join us on working towards completing their Oceanography Badge through hands-on activities. We will be talking about the different branches of oceanography, conducting water quality tests such as pH and turbidity, taking a plankton tow and looking at plankton under a microscope, then seining for local crabs and fish. We will not be signing off on the entire badge, but much of the badge requirements should be covered. This event is open to both Boy and Girl Scouts ages 8-14. CANOE EXCURSION

REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE (ROV) WORKSHOP

ROVs incorporate science and technology to help researchers gather information about the underwater world. In this workshop you will be introduced to ROVs their form and function. You will then be working in teams to design and build an ROV to test and try out underwater. This workshop is designed for ages 12 and older, and requires pre-registration (301) 238.2737. Minors ages 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $25 per person or $45 per couple, limited to 12 people.
