CANOE EXCURSION

Paddle along the shores of Muddy Creek and the Rhode River to learn about one of the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll look for wildlife, birds, reptiles, and more; designed for beginning and intermediate paddlers. Basic instruction will be given at the start of the program. Cost is $14 per adult and $7 for children 6-12 years old, limited to 16 participants. Preregistration and payment is required by calling (443) 482.2300. Canoes, paddles, and lifejackets provided.

HISTORIC CONTEE FARM HIKE

Hike into history on this guided walk to the ruins of the Sparrows Rest and Java Plantation on SERC’s new property. We’ll talk about the changes of the land from the early Native Americans through colonial times and into the present. Some uphill walking is required; wear long pants and hiking shoes. Bees are an important part of our natural environment. They're critical for pollination and the support of functioning ecosystems. This Spring SERC will be adding three working hives to the new Contee Farm property in partnership with the National Museum of Natural History. During this talk, you will learn about the natural history of bees, their astounding feats of strength and endurance, and their biology as a super-organism. We will also discuss diseases affecting the bees and their populations around MD.

CITIZEN SCIENCE BIRD SURVEYS

Get involved locally! Citizen surveys are scientific field surveys headed by group leaders that are professionals or experts in their field. You will be taking data and conducting research in the forests, streams, and fields of SERC to help us get a better understanding of the biodiversity of the site. Join us in surveying the returning spring birds at SERC. We’ll traverse different habitats, look, listen, and record our findings. The previous birding class is not required. Designed for intermediate and advanced birders. If you have binoculars and a field guide, bring them. A limited number are available to borrow. For ages 12+, preregistration is required (443) 482.2300. Free. Physical requirements will be mildly strenuous with hiking up to 1.5 miles. The designated time of the events is 2 hours but some surveys may optionally last longer depending on interest and group leader availability and the site.
