Yini's project for the CIC-Smithsonian Fellowship, “The influence of invasive and native earthworm activity on microbial community structure and carbon cycling dynamic in an eastern US deciduous forest” is an extension of previous research in our lab with her adviser, Tim Filley. This earlier work demonstrated that leaf and wood amendments to the forest floor significantly influenced the mineral soil chemistry. Her current project focuses on the link between the physical distribution and chemical properties of soil organic matter and the microbial community that controls carbon stabilization in SERC's forests.
